Geotechnical soil-testing Rhin-Rhône High Speed Railway Line Eastern branch (France)

Since the preliminary design phase (2003), TERRASOL has been ensuring the Project Management of the geotechnical soil testing campaigns on section C of this High Speed Railway Line (1st phase: packages 5, 6 and 7), between Saulnot and Montreux-Château in France.

TERRASOL assignment consisted in:

  • Identifying the geotechnical data required to optimise the design;
  • Supervising the soil-testing contractors during their on-site works, including check of compliance with safety rules and RFF (owner) procedures;
  • Checking the soil-testing quality and ensuring it matches the geology and project issues;
  • Managing administrative and economic aspects of the contracts.

This assignement proved to be most interesting and sensitive due to:

  • management of several contractors at a time, as well as of various other specialised participants;
  • difficult access to boreholes locations;
  • coordination with local residents and local authorities;
  • large volume of data to collect, check, and analyse;
  • large panel of soil-testing techniques used for the project, due to the variety of issues to deal with: tunnel, earthworks, engineering structures, search for materials, hydrogeology, karstic risk, seismic risk, etc.

Terrasol’s achievements:

  • Definition and adjustements of the soil-testing programmes
  • Project management of the soil-testing compaigns
  • Geotechnical follow-up of experimental structures
  • Analysis of availlable data
